C&S Companies is proud to announce that six of firm’s projects were honored with awards by the American Council of Engineering Companies, New York Chapter, in their annual Engineering Excellence competition.
Diamond Award—City of Auburn Hydroelectric Powerplant Renovation
The North Division Street Hydroelectric Facility is an 1800s structure with a power canal leading to a hydroelectric turbine. The equipment at this facility came online in December 1992 and operated until 2014. The City of Auburn stopped it because of the cost of repairing mechanical failures of the turbine and dam structural deficiencies. C&S designed a complete facility rehabilitation, including engineering and architectural design for the reconstruction of the dam, sluiceway, power channel, control gates, turbine generator, switchgear, powerhouse, and access platforms. C&S also provided regulatory permitting and CA/CI during construction.
Platinum Award—The College at Brockport North Campus Improvements
C&S designed a multi-phased approach to reinvent and transform the North Campus of the College at Brockport, which had significant age-related infrastructure deficiencies. $12 million of infrastructure improvements created greater cross-campus connectivity with other parts of campus, and installed new landscapes and hardscapes that revitalized portions of campus. We created a large GIS-based information model that links to all of the utility and site data collected during the location and condition assessment.
Platinum Award—T.F. Green Airport Runway 5 Extension
To enable larger aircraft and longer-haul flights, T.F. Green airport in Warwick, RI, needed to extend its main runway. C&S performed all consulting services for the extension of Runway 5 and its parallel taxiway to 8,700 feet, including design, public outreach, funding consultation, and construction management. The scope included a new EMAS for runway safety area compliance; lighting, signage, and electrical upgrades; runway pavement profile improvement; 150,000-cubic-yard embankment; new ALSF-2 approach lights and relocated ILS infrastructure; improved stormwater infrastructure; and environmental mitigation. This was the first airfield project in the country to receive an Envision Gold Award from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure.
Silver Award—1886 Malt House
To serve New York’s growing craft beer industry, a turnkey 60-ton-per-week malting facility was designed and built in Fulton, NY. C&S designed and installed a first-of-its-kind malting facility to purchase, store, clean, malt, and package malted barley. A 40,000-square-foot abandoned building was converted into a fully automated, state-of-the-art malting facility known as 1886 Malt House, one of the largest craft malting facilities in the U.S. C&S provided full architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, fire protection, and electrical design services, as well as construction administration and inspection
Silver Award—Mentholatum Building Brownfield Remediation
C&S assisted a developer with the acquisition and redevelopment of the Mentholatum building in downtown Buffalo. C&S worked with the developer to move the project through the New York State Brownfield Cleanup Program, designing remediation methods to safely remove tons of contaminated soil on the property. Constructed in 1919 and used for the manufacture of menthol-based health and beauty products, the four-story, 80,000-square-foot factory was renovated into including 49 market-rate apartments, street level retail, outdoor patios and recreation space, and picturesque views and lower-level and surface parking areas.
Silver Award—Cortland Enlarged City School District Energy Improvements
This energy efficiency improvement project reduced the overall energy consumption of the Cortland school district by implementing innovative energy reduction strategies that save the school district over $300,000 annually. The most state-of-the-art systems were designed and implemented, including the first adaptive lighting control system approved by the Design Light Consortium, called Enlighted. Mechanical equipment was replaced with highly efficient mechanical systems integrated into an open protocol digital building management control system.
