C&S Companies is proud to announce that four of firm’s projects were honored with awards by the American Council of Engineering Companies, New York Chapter in their 2018 Engineering Excellence competition.
Platinum Award—Tonawanda Rails to Trails. C&S designed a 4-mile pedestrian and bicycle trail along a closed rail line through the heart of Tonawanda. With a future connection to the Canalway Trail, this shared-use trail provides access from the Town of Tonawanda to the regional trail network and has spurred economic investment in the area. At all trail access points and roadway crossings, gateway treatments include landscaping, wayfinding signage, and interpretive graphics tying the trail to its rich history. Parking lots were added at both trailheads.
Gold Award—Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport Runway Rehabilitation. Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport is a commercial service facility with three airlines and 90,000 annual passengers. C&S designed a $3.5 million rehabilitation to 6,377 feet (950,000+ square feet) of Runway 14-32 during a 13-day complete airport closure. Runway 14-32 was last rehabilitated in 1998 and deteriorating pavement required extensive maintenance. Construction crews worked 24 hours a day during milling and paving, helping complete the project nearly $370,000 under budget and ahead of schedule.
Gold Award—Norwich Central School District Energy Improvements. C&S designed an innovative, state of the art, completely adaptive intelligent LED lighting system across the entire campus at Norwich CSD. The system not only enhances the educational environment for nearly two thousand staff and students, it significantly reduces their annual utility consumption, which saves the district tens of thousands of dollars annually. The school district was able to provide a new resource for teachers that customizes their teaching environment based on their students’ needs throughout the day. In addition to saving the district more than three million dollars over the life of the system, they avoid lightbulbs and ballasts going to landfills and create an enhanced learning environment for more than two thousand staff and students.
Silver Award—Syracuse Label and Surround Printing New Headquarters. C&S designed a new 60,000-square-foot facility housing both corporate office space and a manufacturing floor. New office, production, and warehouse spaces are programmed around lean manufacturing practices with efficient flow of employees and equipment. The building has an attractive public face, with a two-story curtain wall in the lobby at the public entrance. Clerestory windows above the roofline and full-height windows on the first floor provide significant natural daylight. Overall, the building design accommodates future expansion. Using building information modeling technology, the entire project was designed in three dimensions, increasing accuracy and reducing design conflicts.
